Next Now Festival, 5/31/14; Berkeley Arts Festival Building, Berkeley CA

Next Now Festival organizer Mika Pontecorvo did one hell of a job with yesterday's proceedings, considering all of the logistics! So many musicians, so many musical instruments, so much going on.
I felt a lot like Lurch, hobbling around the Berkeley Arts Festival building with my clunky back brace on. Ah, the joy of herniated discs! Having spent the last three weeks under a sheen of pain killers, my perceptions are somewhat cloudy, so impressions of the actual gig, for me, are similar. I had fun, played with as much energy as could be mustered, and enjoyed hearing Henry Grimes live!

Big show this Saturday, 5/31!

Mika Pontecorvo has put together a massive, all day bill at Berkeley Arts Festival for this Saturday, May 31st!
There are a ton of bands playing, and all proceeds go to the Homeless Action Center.
I will play short sets with Earspray, Ruminations, and Cloud Shepherd. You should go at the time that's best for you, for a good cause.

Jim Ryan/Mark Pino Duo-The Luggage Store Gallery; SF, CA 5/1/14

I have to say that I was pleased with the public debut of the Jim Ryan/Mark Pino Duo.
We rehearsed a lot, with the focus being on playing not so much time, but rhythmic pulse. Our five improvisations seemed well paced to me, and it seemed like our playing was interactive and aware.
Jim was kind enough to consent to me reading some poetry (while he played flute), a piece that was dedicated to Sufi musicians from Syria, whose mosques were destroyed.
Also on the bill was Chekere, who play tuned gourds with shakers on them. They were augmented by some gamelan players, and they were amazing.
What a fun evening!
