New Crow Crash Radio live show up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/crow-crash-radio-live-in-fairfax-11-3-13

Crow Crash Radio always had a kind of naive quality to its sound I think. Primitive guitar playing with theremin drone on top of that, guided by my quirky drumming....yeah, naive and probably un-relatable to many who heard us as we stealthily played around the SF Bay Area for a number of years. We always had fun I think, though, and I truly love Andrew and Brian, they're sweet dudes. Anyway, since the above photo was taken, I've shed about 80 lbs, so I don't really look quite like that guy anymore.

Ovipositor live at Li Po Lounge San Francisco up at Archive.org

https://archive.org/details/ovipositor-041010-full-set

San Francisco's late 2000's DIY zone for dudes of a certain stripe. I guess that I was one of those dudes. The penultimate Ovipositor show, in a sweaty cellar smack dab in the middle 'o Chinatown. Once an architect told me that most of those buildings "aren't even up to code". Yeah, neither was I.

Cartoon Justice live at VAMP Music up at Archive.org!

Heavily electronic and Electro-Acoustic on this set played in a great little record store near Lake Merritt, Oakland. Hope it's still there!

Crow Crash Radio live at Hemlock Tavern audio up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/crow-crash-radio-hemlock-tavern-7-6-18

Probably one of Crow Crash Radio's best shows, we got as far out as we could. Fond memories from a time and city that are fading away. I was happy to be present.

Cartoon Justice Live at Trans Pecos Cafe audio up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/cartoon-justice-trans-pecos

The group starts up after about 2 minutes, and then there's a few minutes of crowd chatter afterwards. The backline drum kit at that place, man, I hope they've upgraded.

Archive shot and musings

Bassist/composer Elijah Pontecorvo and me, getting far out at a theater on 6th St., San Francisco ca. 2015. This was an ebolabuddha set at a show that featured up-and-coming Asian musicians in the San Francisco community. I think Steve Jong, ebolabuddha guitarist, must have shoehorned us onto the bill somehow. I felt strange performing, but the people were friendly and accepting of our weirdness, even the parents of younger people whose first bands were playing. They probably felt a certain amount of disdain as ebolabuddha did our thing I'd imagine. Hopefully their kids went on to get those advanced degrees, marriages, and suchlike.

On a more current note, I'm happy to say that God has granted me a new chance to play music with people! I have been getting together with actual live human beings within an actual physical space in order to organize sounds! You know, music! At this point I have no idea what will transpire with this situation, and, honestly, it's enough for me to just be able to play the drums with people again. I will say that the guy who is leading this group is very smart and very talented, and it's a gas to hang out and jam with him and the other guys that he's rounded up.

My project of archiving a lot of the music that I have been involved with, at archive.orghttps://archive.org/details/@mark_pino, is pretty close to being wrapped up. If you're at all inclined to want to hear warts and all clips of my music, that's the place to check. There will be a few more things posted at that site, but I am quickly running out of files to upload. Having the time to get that project done has been one of the hidden blessings from the past couple of years of living through societal upheaval of world-historic nature, for sure. There have been others for me as well, but, sadly, most of my former associates will likely never hear about mine. I'd be delighted to hear about theirs. Hit me up, I am not hateful.

Nadir Freeballers live clip up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/team-canada-is-for-winners

My memories of this event are pretty vague. I do recall that Colin Frangos asked me to drum on these tunes, tunes that were used as background audio for online spoken word performances that he crafted. Other than that, it's all blurry. One can hear some kind of audience clapping, so I know these tracks were performed in front of people, somewhere in Oakland ca. 2007. It was a fine time to live there.

Ovipositor Live in Chico audio up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/11-the-boxer

Ovipositor bass player Max set this gig up. He had spent time chef'in and workin' in Chico. We played with the great Ghost Echoes and a band that sounded like the E Street Band. It was fun.

Short Failure Cock clip up at Archive.org!

There is a much longer recording of sounds like this from Failure Cock, but I'm still waiting for Scarp to send it to me. Perhaps someday!

New Barney Cauldron track up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/live-at-stud-bar-1-14-10

During the late aughts of this fucking weird century, there was a noticeable drying up of places for bands to play in San Francisco. Long time SF musician and bartender at the SOMA's Eagle Bar, Doug Hilsinger, took up the slack by booking bands there. The Eagle were smart about this, as they managed to get all kinds of great touring and local acts to play within its space. Down Folsom St. a few blocks, the long running Stud Bar followed suite, the difference being that they'd book anyone on one of their slow nights. Hence, Barney Cauldron managed to get on a bill with another local obscurity, Tri-Cornered Tent Show. This show must have occurred on a Tuesday or something. At the end of this set, there are people clapping, so SOMEONE was there. God bless 'em.

I guess that Stud Bar closed down at some point within the last decade or so. I wonder what happened to all of the weird fixtures that they had.

Another live Ovipositor show up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/red-crust

Ovipositor recorded live in Summer of 2009 at Thee Parkside Lounge in San Francisco. We played with the Blind Shake, and incredible band from Minnesota.

Is it Dogpatch or Portrero Hill? A discussion for the scholars.

Tour hang photo!

It was just exactly four years ago that Cartoon Justice managed to get out to the East Coast of the United States to play some shows. New York City and its environs are places where one has to have one's shit together just so, and Cartoon Justice had our shit together in some different, incompatible way. Still, it was fun and interesting. This shot was snapped inside of a neat cafe down the block from our home base rental unit on Bleecker St. in Brooklyn (yes, there is one in Brooklyn, Alan). Best salads there, plus kombucha for, like, days man.

New Barney Cauldron track up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/file0479

Just under an hour of Barney Cauldron trance-ing out at Scarp's pad in West Oakland. He had his basement sent up for all kinds of musical wildness, which was super fun very often!

Listening to this clip, I was saddened by how the group ended (a phone call to a jet lagged me, wrapped up in the SF Giants historic World Series run), but whatever, that's life. The tapes remain, and I'm nowhere near done with this archive project, so take that, cruel world meanies!

Ear Spray Live at Life Changing Ministries audio up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/live-at-life-changing-ministries-1-26-14

This gig was my second or third with Ear Spray. Getting to know Ann and Carlos was really interesting. They are both really sweet people, and their sincerity in the pursuit of weird Noise music as real, at least to me. It seemed to me that there were people within that scene that saw Ear Spray as maybe a bit of a poser type of situation, but I can attest that the group was just as legit as any of the others. For me, Noise is a kind of Folk Music, in that anyone can do it, and it remains a pretty individualistic, hermetic pursuit. Anyway, we were really excited to play this gig at West Oakland's Life Changing Ministries, which was a funky old Evangelical church that had been turned into a squat-like space, with music, art, craziness, etc. all occurring constantly. I don't know if they're still in operation, but I hope that they are. Great memories of watching people get sloshed on mimosas, jamming the Noise, and just having a wonderful late morning/early afternoon in Weird Oakland circa 2014 here. Thanks, Ann and Carlos, you both are wonderful.

Birdsaw tour hand bill from 2002!

A little over twenty years ago, I think that these were the last road trips for Birdsaw, save perhaps a show or two in Los Angeles a bit later in the year.

I remember the Helmet drummer giving me the stink eye in Manhattan. I remember losing valuable gear and the tour booking agent wanting to kill me (thanks, Ned). I remember almost not being able to get my stick bag (given to me by Birdsaw guitar player Dan) onto the plane back to SFO. Touring: FUN!

I also remember floating in the ocean outside of Nag's Head, and beautiful weather in Brooklyn, seeing Monticello, and a neat ferry ride into Delaware, and watching Robin destroy some heckler at a University. Touring: FUN!

It was on this tour that I first started realizing the Birdsaw was perhaps not going to get the audience that we desired; things slowly declined for the band after the tour, and it ground to a halt about a year later. Still, in hindsight, it was more fun than not fun. As we used to say in our vehicle: "thank you for not killing me".

Archive pic and musings....

Playing with Crow Crash Radio at Free Oakland UP! Oakland CA 2014. A small kit with mallets, and buzzing cymbal, Brian Strang art in view, at a store that gives stuff away. Just about perfect for me.

Today marks two years since I did any kind of public performance. Little did I know on 5/8/2020 that twenty four months later I'd be basically retired from that sort of thing. At the time, I was riding high within a small, but very rich, musical world. I absolutely loved running around and playing at any show or jam or rehearsal that I could be part of. Seriously, homey was into it. I had long before given up aspirations beyond anything more than those rather humble musical activities, and was fine with appreciating just being able to do those sorts of things. So, on this day, 5/8/2022, I have to say  that I savor any and all memories and mementos from those times, because they're pretty gone. It's been painful at times, but I've also had many insights and blessings as I've moved away from that sort of musical pursuit. My life has changed drastically, which, really, has been super cool and groovy, despite of the absence of music (except for listening to recordings).

Many musicians have started to get back to their musical pursuits, and bully for them! I'm happy for them, and I wish for all their successes, in whatever way that means for them. I will continue my "absent for the foreseeable future" stance as regards those pursuits of my own. I now reside about 1000 miles away from my musical stomping grounds of the years 1989-2020, in a town where I don't have contacts. At 51 years, I can't really fathom the idea of "breaking into the scene", nor would I even want to do that. There are plenty of hard charging kids out there, and they rock, and swing, and jam, etc. My fun's been had, let 'em have the space. Rules for participation have changed, and the new rules are abhorrent to me, so there's that, too.

Ultimately, I have given it to God. If it's needed for me to be active in music again, He wills it. If He does not, then that is God's will, and that's fine too.

OK, I'm digging in to Metallica's Lulu CD, so I'll leave it there until whenever.........

New Infinite Plastic Internal music up at Bandcamp!

https://infiniteplasticinternal.bandcamp.com/album/tabla-experiment

Two fresh Infinite Plastic Internal tracks, cooked up using tabla drums that were struck with rubber tipped mallets. The first one is the initial recording. On the second, Mika Pontecorvo used his electronic Slice and Dice method to process that recording.

Many thanks to Mika for further collaboration, gratitude to the ancient musical tradition of India, and apologies to Saraswati for the irreverent art work.

New Barney Cauldron live track up at Archive.org!

New Infinite Plastic Internal music up at Bandcamp!

https://infiniteplasticinternal.bandcamp.com/album/infinite-plastic-internal-with-mika-pontecorvo-painted-desert-points

One of the coolest things about my new abode in Tucson, AZ is that I have a piano. The piano makes it so easy to just go and do some music, without the hassle of schlepping here or there, dealing with schedules, etc. It's just really convenient.

For these tracks, I recorded myself, and then sent a clip to Mika Pontecorvo. Mika used his considerable skills with electronics processing to chop, slice, dice, and enhance the clip. He actually produced three tracks from my one clip. We're stoked to be able to have found a way to keep working together, and will likely continue to do so, using this method.

Somehow, the pursuit of music continues, even under strange societal circumstances.

Many thanks to Mika. I love you, dude.

New track up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/scorpios-re-mix

This track is a re-mix of a song on George Earth's great Candymachine CD, from 2004.  When I first heard the track Scorpios on this CD, I really wanted to add some more percussion and other sounds to it. George was kind enough to assent to my desire to do so, and at some point I convinced guitarist/engineer John Axtell to let me take over his studio for a day towards that purpose. It was quite fun to layer different percussion elements to the song; for the life of me, I can't recall what I used to get the weird electronic swooping sound that occurs in the mid-section.

This track was posted at Soundcloud many years ago, now it can live hassle free at Archive.org I guess.

Sheila Bosco/Mark Pino Duo recording up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/sheila-mark-practice-mix

Here is a recording of Sheila Bosco and I, in rehearsal for a live soundtrack that we did for a film by Jerry Smith. This occurred at Berkeley Arts Festival Building, hence the photo of Bonnie Hughes, its patron. As usual, I listened to it and liked it enough to archive.

Shards cover of California Dreamin' up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/05-california-dreamin

George Earth and I recorded this track in a bitchin' Malibu house, owned by Steve Wilmans, in Summer of 2003. Some years back I posted it at Soundcloud, but their copyright bots flagged it and took it down. Like I was making any money off of that! Anyway, here it is again, this time at the less Corporate/Fascistic site that is Archive.org. Donate a few bucks to 'em. I have.

Birdsaw has a new website!

https://birdsaw.wpengine.com/

Produced by Dan Laks and Andrea Goddard. Andrea was a great friend to me and everyone else in Birdsaw. Dan put a lot of work into Birdsaw, that's for sure.

The page looks good, with videos, photos, graphics, and sounds. Nice to see a cool looking archive for Birdsaw!

Carlos Jennings/Mark Pino Duo recordings up at Archive.org!

https://archive.org/details/relentless-hop

Carlos Jennings and I played Noise music together in Ear Spray from 2013 until 2018 or so. One afternoon during the latter year, we got together to make some slightly more conventional sounds together, at my house in Richmond, CA. Recently I listened to them, and I found them to be cool. Emails with Carlos ensued, and he was enthusiastic about them as well. Carlos graciously took some time to do some editing/sound processing on the five tracks at the Archive.org link above. Good times, fun sounds. We found a sense of adventure within the limitations of a duo, in large part due to Carlos's cool loops and synth washes. Too bad we couldn't have done more!

More Cartoon Justice tracks up at Archive.org

https://archive.org/details/c-19-garage-02-01-manic-d

These recordings are of Cartoon Justice stripped down to a trio of Mika, Kersti, and myself. Recorded under heavy manners in Richmond, CA, June of 2020.

A fun, willfully weird band that I loved being involved in. A different time, now gone.

2020-2021 unused song lyrics part 1

This set of lyrics was written for a music project that didn't get past the conceptual phase. Seeing as that they are the only evidence of a project that didn't get too far, and that I kind of like them, I figure to post them here as evidence of some kind of activity in the last years of my "career".
